Nature is full of surprises and shocks! While the mother bears are well-known and versed for their extreme protective love towards their cubs, the fathers are often reported to have hurt the little ones to death! Adding more to that, they sometimes eat their young as well! That is not a new thing to know about animals! Many carnivorous mammals often do so.
